PREMIERE PARTY TO LAUNCH WEB SERIES IN FULLY NOT COOL STYLE
SAN ANTONIO, Feb. 19, 2010 – There’s a premiere party happening next week at the Cameo Theatre Zumbro Room, but to get in, you won’t have to pay: you’ll just have to qualify as being “not cool” enough. The web comedy series Not Cool Like Us, will debut Thursday, Feb. 25 in a free-to-the-public premiere at 8 p.m. with a repeat showing at 9:30 p.m.
Created by San Antonio transplant Amanda Farmer, Not Cool Like Us is a fun, irreverent look at the people and places associated with the Alamo City. The series stars Amanda Farmer, Ben Farmer and Tap Rudra; and the landmarks and locations of San Antonio also play a prominent role in defining the quirky series.
“The whole 'Keep San Antonio Lame' campaign is really poignant in expressing the attitude most young people seem to have toward the city,” said Amanda Farmer. “So when I moved here, I was pretty surprised at how many unique things there are to do. I've lived in New York City and Austin, and honestly, San Antonio has many of the same kinds of off-the-radar gems and interesting people – you just have to know where to find them.”
Local filmmaker Brant Bumpers, whose previous projects include House of the Demon and Comedia-a-go-go, will be at the helm as director of photography, as well as appearing in the pilot episode. The scripted series centers around three fictional siblings, Tina-Faye (Amanda), Ben (Ben) and Brandon “Binkie” Flanigan (Rudra), as they run an alternative magazine in San Antonio. Each episode also includes real San Antonio restaurants, theaters, bars and other landmarks. According to Amanda, the concept of setting fictional characters against a backdrop of real locations developed from the Sex and the City craze that coincided with her years working in Manhattan.
“When I lived in New York, my friends always begged to go to the shoe store that Carrie shopped at, or the restaurant where the girls ate. The places were real, even though the characters were fictional,” explained Amanda. “I thought San Antonio locations would benefit from the same kind of exposure. It would be a creative outlet for us, but also good for the city, in terms of making the place more relatable for the college crowd and 20- and 30-somethings.”
During the premiere party, guests can enjoy free beer, wine and food starting at 7 p.m. while watching episode one, filmed at the The Filling Station restaurant in Southtown, as well as Alibis’ Sports & Spirits and O.P. Schnabel Park. The address for the Cameo Zumbro Room is 1123 East Commerce Street. For more information on the series, visit www.notcoollikeus.com.
